Asus Scar III Review: One of the best Gaming System of 2019

Asus ROG line up is all about crazy gaming. The laptops are specifically to provide you with Amazing gaming experience and performance. when I first heard of upcoming of Scar 3, I was damn excited since I had already tried the previous version of Scar series of laptop.

The ASUS ROG Strix Scar III allowed me to have the power to play extremely processor and graphics-intensive games in 2019, boosted by an RTX 2070 graphics card and 9th-Gen Intel i7 processor. However, it doesn’t bring anything new to the table. It’s not a bad gaming laptop, but it’s pretty much the same as the others in its bracket. In terms of performance, you’re not getting much else here that you wouldn’t elsewhere.

When I got the Asus scar III for review I was mesmerized by the RGB lighting that the laptop had. It’s the no other manufacturer does it, sure they do but not as elegant as the Taiwanese manufacturer does. Scar 3 is one of the best offerings from the company. Coupled with its class-leading 240Hz display panel and oodles of horsepower under the hood, the Scar III is undoubtedly my favorite gaming laptop launched this year.

Scar III – Design and Display

Asus had partnered with the pioneer of car design – BMW to design the chassis for Scar 3. The laptop is designed that it doesn’t get scratched or feels old even after you take it for the ride in public transport. The laptop is designed like a military vehicle, and the laptop’s stiff, tight frame is reminiscent of quality German engineering.

The laptop feature dual-tone finish and the top is made up of metal. The huge ROG logo positioned towards the right of the lid, which can exhibit multiple static colors, or showcase a glowing pattern of your liking. And, if that wasn’t enough, the company has even added a wraparound RGB LED strip towards the bottom which canvases the entire base of the unit. Suffice it to say, you could spot the Scar III from the moon with the laptop’s RGB lighting turned on.

The new Scar III ships with a lot of connectivity option from Asus. The laptop comes with 3 USB Type-A 3.2 ports, an RJ45 LAN Jack, a 3.5mm audio port, an HDMI 2.0 slot as well as a USB Type-C 3.2 port with a DP function, allowing you to connect a compatible monitor to the Scar 3 using a Type-C cable. Surprisingly the laptop ships with a triangle-shaped opening at the bottom Right of the keyboard which company calls as Keystone. This keystone lets you access the shadow drive which can be used to store your private data away from the prying eyes. The keystone also lets you create custom Game profile’s which you can use for Gaming. The Keystone comes with a retail unit and is present inside the retail box.

Well for streamers there’s a piece of bad news – Scar 3 doesn’t come with a webcam. This means you would have to invest in a third-party camera alternative for streaming content online. I wish laptop had a thunderbolt port which could have extended the laptops shelf life a little more.

On the bright side, the ASUS ROG STRIX Scar III is quite compact, and despite being equipped with a 15.6-inch panel, easily masks itself as a 14-inch one. The laptop doesn’t weigh a whole lot too and at 2.9 kilos, I didn’t have any stress issues carrying it around.

Coming to Display part, the laptop is equipped with a 15.6 Full HD display and insanely high refresh rate of 240 Hz. Due to the high refresh rate, you can expect little to no motion blur while gaming. Apart from this, the panel offers a 3ms response time so there will be minimal input delay whilst gaming on the machine. Rest assured, you’ll have great time-consuming content and playing games on the Scar IIIs screen.

Scar III – Performance and Battery Life

If you look at the spec sheet of this laptop you would easily understand that performing daily tasks on the laptop was smooth. With around 20 tabs opened and rendering going on Adobe after effects, the laptop didn’t even sweat. Sure the fans were running at crazy speed to keep the laptop cool. The laptop managed to get decent benchmark scores of 2,372 and 5,405 in CineBench R20 and PCMark 10 tests respectively.

The laptop packs speedy hard disk which helps in blazing fast performance and processing. The HDD has Amazing read and writes speeds of 1800 MB/s. As far as gaming is concerned I was able to Call of Duty World war 2, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey on max settings without any hiccups. While playing I was able to get more than FPS which is quite amazing. The fans on the Scar 3 can get a bit loud and you may need to use headphones as sometimes audio gets muffled because of fans noise. Thankfully due to fans, the laptops can operate normally even when intensive operations are performed on it.  I could comfortably game on the machine for hours without noticing any thermal throttling issues.

Gaming laptops always have a concern of battery. Scar 3 is no different. I was able to get a battery life of 2 hours on a full charge. I performed basic computing tasks and didn’t play games. It’s safe to say you would have to make sufficient space in your backpack to carry massive power Brick to keep it running.

Scar III – Keyboard, mouse & Audio

Asus ROG series have aura sync enabled RGB backlit keyboard. The keyboard is well spacious design and keys are fun to use. While gaming you can easily distinguish between each key feeling them. The arrow could have been a little bigger. Moreover, unlike the competition, the ROG STRIX Scar III’s keyboard doesn’t feature any customizable macro keys, which is a bit of a bummer.

The trackpad performs well. The unit makes use of Windows Optimised drivers and therefore, responds well to multi-finger gestures. What’s more, you can even enable a built-in Numpad by pressing down on the top right-hand side of the unit. The Numpad features red backlighting and therefore, if you work on a lot of Excel sheets, then you’ll undoubtedly find this utility handy.

The laptop comes with two front-firing speakers present at the bottom which are pretty loud and clear. I was able to distinguish between the lefts and rights while playing games. Sometimes the sound gets overpowered by the fans because of which you would want to use headphones for uninterrupted gaming.

Pricing & Availability

The ASUS ROG Strix Scar III is available online at Amazon and Offline via leading retail stores. The laptop is priced at Rs 2,00,000 (Two Lakhs) in India. Currently, there is no laptop which has design and performance which the Scar III offers in the price bracket which it comes in. The ROG Strix Scar 3 is a great gaming laptop that pleases on the eyes. With reliable top-notch performance, this is a package that’s hard to miss out.

Asus has been launching Gaming laptop with immense computing power and with each passing day this power is only increasing thanks to ever-evolving technology. There’s no doubt about this laptop, it can handle any task you throw at it. This machine is immensely capable of putting you in a fantasy world. What I liked the most is the design of the laptop. Asus has finally gone for a design that makes its gaming laptop look elegant and aggressive at the same time. Kudos to the design inputs from the BMW Designworks for making a conventional gaming laptop so appealing. It won’t be an exaggeration to say that this is one of the most exciting gaming laptops you can buy today.
