Asus Vivobook Review: A Student & Pocket Friendly Notebook

In today’s world choosing the right laptop and within the budget is a difficult task especially when there are many choices available with a different set of combinations. The only problem is to have an understanding of what the configuration is and what can it deliver, in terms of performance. I am here to simplify that job of selecting the right laptop for Organisations as well as the student community out there who are looking for a perfect laptop with all the essential hardware and features. In this Article, I am reviewing the recently launched Asus Vivobook X507 (i3) version. The laptop is really lightweight and compact in size but still has all the standard ports and connectivity.

Design

Asus never misses to give the signature brush metal finish on the lid of the laptop and the Vivobook X507 is no exception to it. Surprisingly the whole body of the laptop is made up of plastic but by looking at it you won’t be able to figure it out. The laptop has a nano edge display wherein the bezels of the laptop are very much less compared to regular ones. The top and bottom bezels are huge though. The notebook sports a 15.6-inch (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) Full HD screen, which is a rare sight for any budget laptop that is priced under Rs 30,000, which is impressive. This laptop features an led screen so I didn’t have any complaint with regards to the screen being reflective or causing any glaring distractions which are most of the time the case with the budget laptops. The laptop weighs around 1.55 KG only. If you look at the design, it seems that Asus has purposely kept it simple and focused on Keyboard more. The keyboard has a wave-like design. The keyboard has a textured surface which makes it nice to look at. The spacing between the keys is great. The speaker section on this laptop is present on the bottom of the laptop and sometimes the sound gets muffled because of the surface and downward facing speakers.

The VivoBook X507 has two color variants: Icicle Gold and Star Grey. We got a Star Grey variant for review. It features a fingerprint reader that works flawlessly. Let us look at the specifications of the Asus vivobook x507.

Specifications

15.6-inch (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) Full HD screen and comes with pre-installed Windows 10 Home. The Dimensions of the laptop are 364.8 x 266.4 x 21.9 mm with a weight of 1.68 kg. The laptop is powered by Intel Core i3-6006U running at 1.5GHz and Intel HD Graphics 520 with 8GB RAM and 1TB HDD. On the Connectivity front, the laptop has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. The Ports present on the laptop are 2xUSB 2.0, 1xUSB 3.1 Type-A, 1xHDMI, 3.5mm headphone jack, and MicroSD reader.

Performance

This laptop does not have high-end specifications and hence expecting a great deal of performance is not expected. Starting of the review itself I mentioned the laptop is intended for users like students and SME’s. The machine which was sent to me for review had the Intel’s 6th generation i3 6006u processor clocked at 2.0Ghz. The ram was on the higher side with 8GB Ram. The laptop comes with 1TB of HDD with 5400 of RPM Speed, but there is an m.2 slot on the motherboard which will allow you to use an NVMe based SSD (max 256GB) to speed up the system. Asus also offers a laptop with the Nvidia MX110 with 2GB of graphics memory, but our unit did not have that.

The laptop has some pretty bad application load times because of not having an SSD installed in it. Using a traditional HDD feels like we are into some different century as everything feels like moving in slow motion. The laptop performed really well in the battery test and gave me a total of 5 hours on a single charge.

The laptop can stream movies from Amazon and Netflix without any display problems or stutters unless you are having an Internet issue. If you movies in external media devices, you can just simply connect and start watching the videos right away. Windows Media player and VLC player should do the work for you. This machine is perfect for professional as well as personal work. Students can use this machine for taking down notes and research paper submissions. Remember if you are buying this machine then don’t forget to add the SSD from Asus for a better performance.

Keyboard and Mouse

Asus Vivobook X507U has no doubt the spacious keyboard, there’s enough space between the key for you to type easily and comfortably. It would take time for you to get accustomed to the keyboard but once you are comfortable with it you would be on typing spree. The Trackpad below is made up of plastic but it feels great and performs really well. There’s also a fingerprint sensor present on this laptop which works pretty well and is fast in recognizing fingerprint. For me, the fingerprint scanner worked 9 out of 10 times. The problem in keyboard is with the number keys which have been squeezed on the side to fit in the keyboard. It may happen that you may sometime press 2 keys instead of one.

Pricing and Availability

The Asus Vivobook is priced at 27,990/- and its available at major e-commerce stores in India. The laptop is available at best deals at Paytm and Amazon. The laptop can be purchased offline through Asus authorized preferred partners.

Conclusion

Asus vivobook is no doubt a great entry-level laptop in the budget segment, the VivoBook X507 flaunts a simple, minimalistic design and with an attractive LED screen, which did not cause a distraction due to the lack of reflectivity, which is impressive. However, when it came to actual performance, the laptop was snappy making it easy for me to recommend it to students or enterprises.

The laptop has a great battery backup coupled with 8GB Ram, I was even able to use photoshop for doing basic editing and color grading photos without any issues. So its a must buy and easy to recommend for me to anyone looking to buy laptop within budget.
