Coolpad Cool 1 Review: Dual Camera on a Budget

LeEco a Chinese smartphone and content giant had recently acquired the largest stake in Coolpad. What does that mean to users?. Well, both the companies are already performing well in the markets they are present. Coolpad in past has tried various pricing in India for different models they launched. LeEco after acquiring the stake in Coolpad, have launched a phone Cool 1 which is the combination of both companies hardware and software capabilities. The New Cool 1 looks really promising but at the same time it is a look like of LeEco Le 2 and the headphone jack is present.

Coolpad Cool 1 Design

The Coolpad cool 1 features the same design as Le 2 and in fact, if you place both the phones side by side you won’t be easily able to make out which is Le 2 and Coolpad Cool 1. Although the rear panel differs because of the Dual camera setup and Dual Tone Led flash. The metal chassis is sturdy and thankfully does not attract any kind of fingerprint or smudge. The Silver running across the phone looks great and adds to the overall look of the phone.

The phone houses 5.5 FHD IPS display. The phone has a quite thick bezel when compared with its counter Le 2. The panel itself offers good viewing angles, and color reproduction and brightness levels are fairly adequate. Under harsh sunlight, the display can get washed out a bit but other than this, we didn’t face any issues. You also get Corning Gorilla Glass 3 to protect it against scratches. The phone is safe to use without a scratch guard. The phone comes with dual sim slot but without the hybrid sim slot so it means you cannot expand the inbuilt storage. The bottom you find USB – Type C port for charging and data transfers. There are two speaker grills present on the bottom, only one is accessible and another one is for symmetry purposes. Symmetry is maintained with proximity and front camera sensor. The front camera comes with 8MP and the rear camera comes with dual camera setup 13MP + 13MP.

Coolpad Cool 1 Performance

We have been using the device for almost a month and the device fairs really well we had no problems with the battery and performing multiple tasks. The phone is able to handle multi-task quite well. We were able to play high-end games smoothly without any melee lag. The phone didn’t have any glitch in rendering HD videos. Most importantly the camera performs really great. The issue is only with processing part. The inbuilt camera app takes quite a time to process the photos taken in SLR mode. The Slr mode in camera app takes really great bokeh photos which can be refocused later from the gallery. The Bokeh are quite well processed in the phone and we are amazed at the quality of bokeh photos achieved. The front and rear camera surprised us everytime we used them. The rear camera is able to auto-focus well and has auto hdr function which is helpful in taking photos against the light. The battery of the phone never disappointed us. The 4000mAh is simply enough usage for more than a day. The downside we found is on the speaker end. The speakers of the phone sound too low.

The Cool 1 Dual has dual 13-megapixel cameras on the back. One has a color sensor while the other is used for monochrome data, which when used in combination, offers better image quality and less noise in low-light pictures. In practice, this combination didn’t really produce the desired results all the time. Low-light images had noticeable noise and detail was generally poor. The colors improved when we switched to ‘Night’ mode, but not by much. In daylight, the camera struggled a bit with light metering, and we often found overexposed areas in both landscapes and close-ups. Colors were captured better in daylight, but subjects in focus lacked sharpness and ended up looking flat.

Video recording goes up to 4K, and while footage looked good in daylight, it got a bit grainy and there was a lot of color noise visible in low light. The front 8-megapixel camera is decent for selfies in good lighting but not so much under artificial or low-light.

Focusing speed is good and images are saved rather quickly, with little delay. Among the shooting modes, we have SLR, which attempts to simulate greater bokeh levels, but this doesn’t always work. Sometimes SLR photos look too over blurred. The camera app is easy to use and there are a good number of options to choose from for shooting, including filters. It just needs a bit more polish as, for example, the menu labels don’t change orientation when you switch from portrait to landscape mode.

Coolpad Cool 1 Dual specifications and features

The Cool 1 Dual is powered by the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 SoC, which is the faster version of the one found in the Redmi Note 3, with two additional ARM Cortex-A72 cores. The review unit we had was of 4GB of RAM, which is reserved for the online variant, and 32GB of storage, which is common to both units. Other specifications include Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, USB-OTG, FM radio, and GPS. The phone also supports 4G LTE on both SIM slots, and there’s a toggle in the Settings app to enable voice calls using VoLTE. Our unit was able to make voice calls over the Jio network and data was working absolutely fine. As this phone is a joint effort of LeEco and Coolpad, the Cool 1 is powered by the LeEco’s EUI and it ditches the Cool UI in favor of EUI. It does make sense as CoolPad now falls under LeEco and there’s no point in keeping multiple customer version of EUI running on android. If you have used a LeEco phone before then the UI would look familiar to you. If not then it would take some time in getting accustomed to the new UI. There are a couple of useful preloaded apps, plus the Amazon app, but apart from this, the interface is free of bloatware. The UI on Cool 1 doesn’t include the LeEco supertainment services.

Coolpad Cool 1 Battery

The Cool 1 comes backed by 4000 mah battery which is pretty huge. The Device comes with Quick charge as well to charge the huge battery. The phone is able to keep running for more than a day on heavy usage of 4G data, Calls, music and some gaming. The phone’s battery really impressed us. The software optimization in the phone makes the background process to the minimum which makes the battery life extended.

Coolpad Cool 1 Network and Call Quality

Coolpad cool 1 works pretty well with reliance jio and other network providers. The call quality is decent on the device but there’s no call recording feature available on this device unlike the Le 2 from which the software has been ported to this device. At times there were sudden call drops which can be irritating.

Summary

The Cool 1 Dual offers good performance for its price. It’s built well, and it has a sharp display, very good battery life plus sufficient power for most tasks. The lack of expandable storage is our only major gripe here as 32GB might not be enough a year down the line. Given a choice, you should buy this phone online as you get more RAM at the same price.
